Shiloh - Blog Question #2

We talked in class about Marty's "web of lies."  He is lying to Judd Travers, to his sister, to David Howard and his mother, and even to his parents.  In the book, Marty says, "A lie don't seem a lie anymore when it's meant to save a dog."

Is it okay to tell a lie when you are trying to help someone or something?  Or do you think that it is NEVER okay to tell a lie?  Do you have any examples of when it might be okay to lie?  Do you have any examples of how a lie might get you in to even MORE trouble?

Once you have typed your entry, please submit using "Name/URL."  Type in your first name only.

Remember to write at least 3-5 sentences, and to use correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation.  If you are unable to complete this assignment on the internet, please use either paper and pencil or type your response.  If you choose to respond to someone else's post, please be respectful of other students' thoughts and opinions.

If the thing is something like an animal or person that is being mistreated it is ok to lie about the animal/person to keep it safe. Although, if you keep lying to the point that almost everything you say is a lie, then you need to stop or you will get your self into more trouble

I think that you should not lie if you are going to be greedy or something else that is wrong. But if you have to lie for a good reason I think that is okay.

In my opinion you should never lie. You should always tell the truth. It is better to tell the truth because if you lie you might forget your story and get caught and get into even more trouble than you would`ve if you had told the truth. No matter the situation most of the time, you will resolve it if you tell the truth.

I think you really should try to avoid lying as much as possible, but in this case if I was Marty I would’ve done the same thing. I think it’s okay to lie if your life, someone, or something depends on it. Once I lied about taking some chocolate that belonged to my mom, and it was in the refrigerator, and I ate it. Later the next day she was looking for it, and she asked me if I knew what happened to it, and I said that I didn’t know. She found out later that I ate the King size bar, and I got into big trouble. She told me that if I had told the truth the first time, I wouldn’t have gotten into as much trouble. That is why you should (most of the time) tell the truth.

It is ok to lie if YOUR LIFE or ANOTHER LIVING BEING’S LIFE is in danger. For example, when your parents forgot to pick you up from school and a stranger drives up to you; they tell you: “ I’m here to pick you up. Your parents told me to meet you here.” That’s when you can lie and maybe say: “ I just heard something outside because I stay after school to do extra work and my mom called and she said she will pick me up in a few.” After that go to the front office immediately explaining the situation. So, yes you can lie sometimes.

I think it was right for Marty to lie. If feel it is ok to lie if a living thing depends on it. This is like, for example, Monsters Inc. Mike and Sully lied about not knowing where the kid was even though they were keeping it; just like with Marty and Shiloh. Mike and Sully lied to keep the kid out of danger because Randle was trying harm her. So the only excuse to lying is saving a persons or animals life.

I think it is okay to lie sometimes. For example, if a stranger drives up to your friend and says that they are there to pick her up, and he/she does not know them, you could say that your mom was picking her up to work on a homework project, then walk away and tell someone. Marty should tell the truth because he will get in a lot of trouble if his parents found out. Do not lie unless you absolutely have to. Is it right? Is it for a good reason? Would your parents be mad after you told the truth after you lied?

I think that lying always was wrong and always will be wrong because no matter what lying will eventually catch up to you and just like Marty's mom said, god sees everything.

Yes, it’s ok to lie for Marty because he is lying for good reasons, or he had lied for a bad reason he would get in big trouble instead of a small one. It is like the Factor Trace and The Ladder, which lie goes on and goes on, but eventually, it has a stop and you have to tell the truth. Also, it is kind of like the "web of lies", told by ELA teacher, eventually, you get stuck and have to tell the truth. In a story, lie might make suspense, by making people think He/She is going get stuck in the lie or not, and etc. In my opinion, in the near future, he will have to tell the and Judd is going to get in big trouble!

I think lying is right sometimes, for example a stranger comes up to you and says that one of my family members told him to buy me an ice cream inside his truck. Its okay/safe to say a lie, like, you are with a friend and her mom is taking us to a movie theater.

I think lying is a bad thing because the truth will always be revealed sooner or later.

Lying is okay in a life threatening situation. For example a person on Halloween and says"I have candy in the back of my van can you get in and get it.". It is very well to say "I got a lot of candy already.". Run to the nearest adult you know, you can trust and spill the beans.

Yes, it’s ok to lie for Marty because he is lying for good reasons, a lie might get you into more trouble because in the end someone will find out that you have been lying the whole time.

In my opinion it is OK for Marty to tell a lie, but only for some reasons. In Marty's troubles it is OK to tell a lie since it is for a good cause. If Marty told the truth Shiloh would have been abused by Judd Travers, and Marty would never see the person he cares for most agian.

its not okay to lie like imagine somebody lied to you that they didnt take 20 $ from you but they did how would you feel plus martys personality is against lying and he critisises judd for lying when he lies and marty lies so he is a hypocrite so its not okay for him to lie (if there are typing errors sorry im listing to every single queen song in a row so dont stop me now that was a pun).

I think it is ok to lie if you are saving or helping someone or something. In Marty's case he is lying to save Shiloh from being abused, so I consider this ok. In another case, like you got an F on a spellimg test and are trying to hide your grade from your mom by lying, I consider that a bigger (black lie). I think you might get in more trouble if you lie in the second case.

I know that Marty was lying for a good cause but I think it’s bad to lie because now he will have to keep up with up with all of the lies which will get hectic. An example when a lie will get you in more trouble is when you tell your mom that you got a good grade but when you actually got a bad grade. This is unbeneficial because if you lie then your mom can’t help you in the things that you got wrong.

yes i think it is okay for him to tell lies to keep some one or something happy or health. why i think it is okay is because if he did not lie, then judd would have had shiloh by now, and shiloh would have been hurt or worse cause of judd. Also because marty is feeding the dog shiloh he is not eating good himself. That also means that marty could have a chance of getting health issues. Marty is doing the right thing to help shiloh and making sure he is fed. If judd had him right now in the book then shiloh would not be fed and not given attention to. Judd also said that he could treat his dog anyway he wanted so if judd took him then he could have shot him like he might have done with his other dog.

Another example is when you lie people like your family, teachers, and friends stop believing anything that you share with them making a person untrustworthy creating a whole lot of hurt and alienation. This relates to the story of the boy who cried wolf.

I think that it is ok to lie sometimes if your trying to help/make someone feel better. For example, if someone says, “I’m so bad at this!” you might say “no you’re not, you’re really good at this!” to make the person feel better. I think Marty made the right choice lying to his parents to keep Shiloh because he is trying to saving Shiloh’s life from being mistreated by Judd.

In this situation lying is bad, but Marty is lying because he knows he is doing for a good cause.
