Shiloh Blog - Question #3
Blog Question #3: When Marty sees Judd kill a doe out of season, he uses this information to blackmail Judd into letting him keep Shiloh. As you know, Marty is an animal lover; he does not want to see any animals hurt. Although Marty is happy to keep Shiloh as a pet, he also feels guilty because he thinks that he is now putting other deer in danger. “He kills this one out of season,” Marty thinks, “he’ll figure maybe he can kill some more.” We call this a “moral dilemma.”
In many countries, blackmail is a crime punishable by a fine
or imprisonment. What would you have
done in Marty’s situation? Would you
report Judd to the game warden? Would
you keep the information to yourself in order to keep Shiloh away from
Judd? Do you think Marty made the right
decision? Please explain your answer in
at least three complete sentences.

I believe Marty did the right thing because a dog getting abused is more important than a couple of deer losing their lives. Even though it is not right to shoot deer out of season Marty`s whole family has sympathy for Shiloh. If Marty didn`t take up the offer Shiloh would`ve gone back to his old life (being abused).
i think it is right, because even though the loss of the doe for a life of a dog is not fair, Shiloh would have to go through more pain being beat to death. Since the doe's death was quick but Shiloh’s death would be long and painful. Plus, reporting the doe's death to the authorities would also put Marty in danger. So, if Shiloh had to deal with many beatings ultimately leading to his death, and it would risk putting Marty in danger, then I think not telling about the doe and keeping Shiloh is the right choice.
I would tell the game warden because it would destroy the deer population. I would keep the information to help Shiloh stay away form Judd Travers because if he didn't, he would have a great heart ache and won't sleep at night. I do think that Marty made a great decision because it could save Shiloh's life.
I think that Marty did the right thing because the dog is getting hurt and I think that a dog is way more important than a couple of deer and Judd Travers still might be caught if he does it more. Also Marty's family loves Shiloh and they would not like Shiloh being abused.
I think Marty made the right choice. There are millions of other deer in the world. Plus, the whole Preston family really like Shiloh. So it doesn't really matter if a few deer die if it means Shiloh not getting mistreated anymore. All it takes is a small price of hard work for two weeks and he has Shiloh. That's why I think Marty made the right decision.
How do reply to each others comments?
sorry about the mistake on the comment:)
I think Marty made the wrong choice because deer are very important to me. I know how Marty feels because I know what he is going through. I grew up in West Virginia almost 9 years of my life and deer are very important to us. I would tell the game warden straight away. I do not mind shooting deer in season, because there are foals (babies). But the population will keep decreasing. Everyone says there are millions of deer in the world, but imagine if none are left.
I think I would tell the game warden because its not right to kill animal, because the population of the deer will go down. I would just keep blackmailing him because, just staying quiet about something this BIG, is not right. People can not keep secrets even if they say they'll stay quiet, although Marty is trying to keep Shiloh, he can do other things like go to court and accuse Judd of mistreating animals with the witness of his family and maybe almost the small town knows that Judd is agressive and mean.
I would try and tell the game warden about Judd killing a doe out of season, While trying my best to keep it a secret until I earn enough money for Shiloh. Although, if Marty would decide to tell the game warden, Judd would find out pretty quickly. Another bad thing is Marty wouldn't be trusted by Judd and he wouldn't be able to buy Shiloh.
Marty did make a mistake in his choice. He could use a better idea to save the deer’s population and Shiloh’s life. I think he should have called the game warden to tell Judd killed a doe out of season, then he would have to pay. After that, Marty should blackmail that I am going to call the animal control, that how Judd treated his dog, if you don’t let me have it. The blackmail would make Judd in more trouble, and deers population will be saved. Finally, Judd might say, I will sell the dog for $40, and you have to work 2 hours a day except for Sat and Sun. For sure he will give lots of work to do in 2 hours, and the work might not even fit in 2 hours. Judd is mean and aggressive that doesn’t mean Marty should give up, and that’s exactly why he went fight with him. This is how he might be able to save the deer’s population and Shiloh’s life.
If it was me, I would’ve made the same decision, because my neighbors dogs are so adorable, and if they were being abused by their owner (which they’re not) I would do almost everything to protect them. In this case I would’ve kept the deal of Marty not saying anything in order for him to keep Shiloh. If it were me I would’ve never told another living soul that information, because I would want to keep Shiloh safe and loved (not abused). In conclusion I think Marty made the right decision, but I would’ve added no more shooting deer out of season to the deal.
I think marty made the right decision, because marty gets to keep shiloh. And all marty has to do is help judd for 2 hours each day for 5 days.
I would report Judd too, unless he let me keep Shiloh. I would protect the dog at all costs if it were asking for my help and being abused. I probably would not tell the game warden anyway because I would want my family to stay safe from Judd. So, I do think think Marty made the right choice.
I think Marty made the right choice. I think this because there are more deer in the woods but Judd has killed dogs before, so that is why Marty accepted the deal to save Shiloh. I wouldn't keep the information to myself I would tell my family and ask them if I should take the deal before answering to Judd. If I were to keep the information to myself then this might my family in trouble if they don't know about it.
Marty made the wrong decision of blackmailing Judd Travers. First of all if Marty just told the game warden , then Judd would have gotten fined $200 or $400 if he told the game warden about the dog. He also might have had a chance of getting Shiloh that way. Also a downside to that, if the people of the area that they live in find out about that then Marty's Family would be embarrassed. The second reason why Marty made the wrong decision is that now If Judd kills another deer then tells Marty to carry it into the shed for him, then he could get caught and get fined. You already know that Marty's family is poor so if they don't pay of the fine then he could get imprisoned, and if that happens then his family will be glum and embarrassed. those are my two reasons why Marty made the wrong decision.
Marty did the wrong thing by blackmailing Judd Travers. Yes I know that he did it for Shiloh but Marty knows that Judd can shoot him strait in the head. At the same time I think that Marty did the right thing because Shiloh could get shot but the Preston's are attached to Shiloh and don't want to give him up.
I would keep the information secret like Marty. Even though Judd keeps shooting out of season, it’s not that bad, because there will be more deer around. The deal was good because it would prevent Shiloh from being mistreated and Marty’s family loves Shiloh. I feel saving Shiloh from being abused is more important than preventing Judd from shooting out of season, so I think Marty made the right choice.
I think that Marty made the right choice. Of course blackmailing isn't right, but in this situation, its okay because no one could believe Marty if he told them about Judd Travers abusing his dog, because they're not much evidence and if he told him shooting deer out of season, then he wouldn't get Shiloh and Shiloh would die with no one caring for him in Judd's house. Also everyone loves Shiloh and Judd could easily lie about the deer he killed so it would be no use telling anyone. So I think that Marty made the right decision.
I would definitely tell the game warden because you can't just let someone break the law and get something you want. I don’t think Marty made the right decision because if it was me, I would tell the game warden right away and then what I would do is to try to blackmail Judd with some other idea. If I was Marty I would try to use a better idea to save the deer’s population and Shiloh’s life.
Shiloh might be really important to the Preston's family, but I think there might just be a side that Judd hasn't shown to anyone since he was abused when he was four.
If I were in Marty's situation I would have at least told my parents about the job before I agreed to it. I also would not have reported Judd to the warden. I also think that Marty made the right decision because if Shiloh went to Judd then he would continue to kick Shiloh and possibly kill him.
